If there was one thing Lee would never have expected in an aristocrat’s London home, it was that it would be messy. It was a better class of mess, she had to admit. An antique divan had three fur coats left tumbled on it, with a plate on top, which bore the remnants of some sort of strawberry cake. A trail of expensive women’s shoes was left at the front door, where the owner had obviously taken them off on arriving home, and never picked them up again, pair after pair. There was at least two weeks’ worth of newspapers disassembled on the rug by the fireplace, with an ashtray spilled over the lot. Beside the rug an enormous stuffed cougar lay on its side, frozen in midsnarl, and a second marmalade cat, the twin of the first, was nestled on the cougar’s neck happily, as if it recognized the family relationship.

Where Lee would have pretended nothing was wrong, Jake immediately said, laughing, “Can’t you get someone to clean this up? It’s a disgrace, Ralph.”

Ralph yawned. “Oh, I think I gave her the week off. My parents and sister are away, you know. I don’t like people lurking when I’m here by myself. They spy and tell stories to the tabloids. And then, of course, if I don’t do anything depraved, I’m so conscious of disappointing them.”

Then Lee couldn’t help interjecting, “This is all from a week?”

“Oh . . . I suppose a few days,” said Ralph carelessly. “I don’t remember when I went to New York at all, now.”
